People of the Northwest Coast Reflection

Hello Class, here is the question I would like you to reflect on, you all have until Wednesday to respond. Please respond to this question under this post and click "post comment."

Question:
From what you have learned, from last class and your canoeing field trip, how do you think our lifestyle is similar to the people of the Northwest Coast? Are you able to make any connections?

  1. Whats up people!!
From the canoeing feild trip I reflected apon the different similarities we had with the Northwest Coast people. The story of the guy who took the plant ladies grandmother away from the arranged marriage was very modern theme which would normally happen. I enjoyed the fact of the how everyone worked together in their own divisions and made a community of great people. The warriors would protect and the life giver-doctors would help. JUst as our police protect while docters heal. They used everything they had in their envirment. They made canoes out of huge trees that would provide ease to deal with their rivers Just as we built skyscrappers out of stone and sand. I feel both our cultures unite to make one soul group of humans.

  3. After learning and experiencing the people of the Northwest Coast, I've discovered many similarities. Just as they have their warriors, canoe builders and basket weavers, we have our army, car builders and clothing-making machines. Although we are more advanced then the people of the Northwest coast, our spirits for new innovation and new findings were always the same. From people of the North West coast, we have learned the different uses for herbs, leafs and vegetation. And people from the tribes have adapted to our findings and innovations, such as electricity, cars and mobiles. Our cultures are not so different either. Northwest coast people have their tribe symbols, we have our family crests. The well respected families of the Northwest coast wear more extravagant clothing, just as how we show our wealth by clothing, jewelry and cars. After learning all about the Northwest Coast people, I've felt that no matter what part of the word your come from, we're just one big family.

  4. After learning about the people of the Pacific Northwest coast, I've definitely realized the many similarities we have with them. One major similarity is that the families with a higher status would wear better looking cloths and garments while the people of our time will wear expensive attire to show off their wealth or higher status. We're also similar by the way we use the earth. They used everything in their surroundings such as wood to make houses, canoes, etc. We also do the same by using metals which come from the earth to make cars, buildings, and phones.

  5. I don't really think our North American culture is necessarily similar to the Native American culture. North Americans are not really caring towards nature as much as the Native Americans. We don't care if we kill dandelions etc. The Natives believed that there is some kind of world nervous system and nature is some kind of being. Most North Americans are much less superstitious. We also don't use fresh plants as medicine (natives use them though) Instead, we use chemicals to treat diseases etc.

There ARE a few similarities though. Social Status= Better Life (although all cultures are like that) They have army and stuff. We have army and stuff. They have marriage, we have marriage...etc etc.

If you want to get very specific until its redundant, then there are a lot of similarities. However, overall there are not a lot of similarities between our present culture and the past Native American culture.

  6. Our lifestyle is similar to that of the people of the Northwest Coast in some ways. One is social status, families with a higher status normally had better things such as better clothing and a better house. They also had a bigger influence on the rest of the people. Second is we use water ways as transportation, the people of the Northwest Coast traveled by canoes while we use a different variety of boats, kayaks etc. Third is we have groups of people that do jobs to help meet our daily lifestyle. Such as we have doctors who help us take care of our health, and armies that help defend our countries, and a group of people(such as a government) that keep everything running in sync. There are several different similarities we can make with the people of the Northwest Coast if we look closely.

  7. Although much has changed since the Northwest Coast peoples were the only humans in this area, we all still depend on some similar resources. For example, salmon is still relied on as a food source, even though the diet of modern Canadians living here are much more varied. Another similarity is that we still use wood to build our homes, for the same reasons that the Aboriginals used: wood insulates well and is sturdy. Also, people still gather berries, other fruits, and edible plants for food, even if it's seen more as a recreational activity than for survival. Our lifestyles are different from the Northwest Coast people's, but the basic elements remain the same.

  8. Our society is similar to the Northwest Coast peoples in many ways. One way is the jobs such as weavers and canoe makers are similar to clothing tailors and boat builders in modern day. Another comparison I made to the native people were the food sources. Since the topography is the same from years ago we continue to eat lots of fish and seafood due to the ocean. We also remain using wood and earth materials for building and constructing new items. Although much has changed over time, we continue to use the same basic needs as the Northwest Coast people did. Thanks for taking us on the field trip!

  9. I don't think the cultural aspect of our society and the peoples of the Northwest coast's were very similar. This is because our current culture tends to be very influenced by our Western Heritage and American Ideals. And also, because we live in the 21st century, there is a technological difference between our current society and lifestyle and the original natives of the Northwest's. But there are some similarities in our lifestyles. During the time of the native people, when they built their homes and buildings, the aboriginal peoples relied on wood. Although today many buildings are constructed from concrete, steel and mortar; in the Vancouver and Northwest Area, many homes are still made of wood. Another similarity of the people of the Northwest and modern British Columbians are that we both lived in a time of relative peace. This fact would be an important variable for deciding the quality of lifestyle and would have a tremendous effect for the people. So to sum it up, there are many differences in cultures between us and the people of the North West coast and which ultimately resulted in conflict. But we both lived peacefully amongst each other and both groups utilized the environment for shelter.

  10. :D
I think that there are not too many similarities between out two cultures, but the similarities we do share are rather apparent. For example, fish, most notably salmon, are both very important to us all. The Northwest Coast people also took an interest in art, which is shown through stuff like totem poles, for example. In fact, a lot of art in Vancouver today is based upon the art style of the Coast People. There are still totem poles in places such as Stanley Park, and those were built rather recently, since totem poles only last around 100 years. But yeah, like I said before, not too many similarities, although I think the fact that pretty much everyone has a role in the community also ties in with the People of the Coast.
    :D

  11. I think there are many similarities between the Aboriginal Culture and our culture today, but it's just that we can't list them all at once; only a few examples. The Aboriginal Peoples pick berries; we pick berries. The Aboriginal Peoples make herbal medicines; some cultures today also make herbal medicine (although not just herbal, there is also dried seafood to cure some diseases for treatment, ie. cancer treatment). We smoke and salt salmon; Aboriginal Peoples also smoke and salt salmon. Both cultures use the surroundings around them thoroughly and wisely. If a family or group has expensive clothing, it means they're a higher class/status. We eat fish; the Aboriginals also eat fish. There is one difference I remembered from the field trip: The Aboriginal Peoples' only transportation types are: by foot and canoe. We, however, have our parents/siblings to drive us from hither and thither, we bike, skateboard, etc. But as I said at the beginning, just because we think that there aren't that many similarities, doesn't mean that there aren't anymore similarities; we just probably can't remember everything at once and list them.

  12. Our lifestyle between the people of Northwest Coast is really similar. For example, fish such as salmon is important to us and the Natives. Since we are living in the same topography, it’s really convenient for us to have seafood, especially salmon. We don’t only eat salmon but we also use it in artwork. Speaking of artwork, from today we still preserve and carry on the native people's art. Stuff like the totem poles, the wooden carvings, jewelry, and many more fantastic art. Therefore, the native's lifestyle is pretty similar to ours from today! :)

  13. I would say our lifestyles differ from one another, but our resources are quite the same. An example would be like salmon is a dietary staple for the Northwest Coast people and we today have salmon and other fishes ,too. We even use wood for constructing homes and other buildings. Also, our art that we do today and the art what the Northwest coast people did were different in style. Even if there were different ways of living, the basic survival needs were very much alike.

  14. I would say that our lifestyle is not very similar to the peoples of the Northwest Coast since there are only a couple ways I can think of. One is people with more money have nicer things and a "higher status." Also, families help eachother out and do activities together. In addition, we share the same resources and eat many of the same things. We also use some of the same materials to create buildings and clothes. Our lifestyles are different mostly because of the fact that, for us, family and being together is not as demanding and necessary as it is for them.

  15. I think that our lifestyles are similar because in Vancouver we live close to the water so a big part of our business has to do with the ocean too. Also if we were to try and find a source of food that was easily reachable it would be fish like the people of the North West coast.

  16. I think that our lifestyles are not very similar. But since we bot live on the coast salmon and other fish are an important part of our diet. But are cultures are similar in some ways. For example if somebody has expensive items or clothing they are high class. If they do no own expensive things they are middle or low class.

  17. I feel one way that our culture/ lifestyle is similar is through music. The North West coast people greeted each other with song and it was a very big part of their life. We too also listen to music and express our feelings through music like the North West coast peoples.

  18. As time evolves, people change the way they live and adapt to their culture. I believe, due to the fact that we and the Northwest coast peoples live in the same region, that means we have identical topography, climate, vegetation, and so forth, which shapes our lifestyle respectively. The people of the Northwest coast work together as an extended family to meet their basic needs, which include clothing, food, and shelter. In their family, the women would mend baskets, men would gather food, and children would learn from their families, how to achieve certain survival skills. I find that we too are some what dependent on each other, for example: for teachers to gives us an education and as a family we are dependent on the breadwinner of the family.

  19. I think our lives are both different and similar to the people of the Northwest Coast. One thing is we have the same topography, climate, and vegetation, we have just advanced more. We still fish, and eat berries. Another thing would be tea. Lots of people drink tea! We also still use wood for shelter support.

  20. Our modern lifestyle is similar to the people of the Northwest Coast in many ways. Today, we still rely on salmon on a food source, as did the people of the Northwest Coast. Also, many athletes and other people use all natural medications and herbal teas, on our field trip I learned that the people of the Northwest Coast used many similar techniques. I also learned that they had very close families and communities, and in modern day we do to, even if we live in separate provinces. We still visit each other as often as we can. And our communities are brought closer together because of events that go on (ex. hockey and the Olympics)

  21. Our life style is somewhat similar to the Northwest peoples. Firstly,we both also pray and thank god in one way or another. Also, the females acted like car givers, such as doctors today. I found the most interesting part when the tour guide was explain to us about all the kinds of herbal and nature related medicines, which will help us in the later future. We also still eat foods like salmon.Lastly, the way the families live together relates to how these days, some families live in families and support and help each other and work together. Thats about it...

  22. I think are lifestyles are pretty different. The northwest peoples care for the environment alot more than most of us do. We all make clothing and eat food however we just do them different ways. The natives weaved things and we sew things and they ate lots of fish and so do we but we can just go to the store and buy food whereas they had to work alot harder than we do. I also think we care more about our social status than they do. Either way i think our life styles are pretty different.

  23. I think that the northwest coast people's lifestyle and our lives are kind of similar but also differ in many ways. The northwest coast peoples eat a lot of fish. We eat fish as well, but we dont depend on it as much as the northwest coast peoples do. They also had to catch the fish in order to eat it, while we just have to go to the grocery store and buy our food. Another difference is that the northwest coast people are very thankful for everything in life, from nature to people, they are very grateful for everything that they have. Whereas, we sometimes take things for granted and not realize how important and fascinating nature is. Overall, I think the northwest coast people are very intersting, kind people and we have so much to learn from them.

  24. Our lifestyle, and the people of the Northwest Coast are very similar. Both the Northwest Coast people, and us, like to sing songs to express our feelings. Our lifestyle consisted of eating lots of fish, since we live so close to the ocean. The Northwest Coast peoples also eat lots of fish at the same time. Another similarity would be that both of us like to use nature for other different reasons. We both enjoy making tea out of fresh leaves from the forest, and we both like to use the plants in the forest for uses of medication.

  25. I find that the Northwest Coast people and us are similiar in some ways but we are also different in other ways. The Northwest Coast people went on canoes to do many of their jobs while we may not use the canoe so much for that we use it to also go fishing sometimes, like they did. We are in the same topography and climate as the Northwest Coast people so we also use the land that they use and adapt to the same climate as they do. We don't treat the natural resources as well as the Northwest Coast people do. We just use the resources up. We also use herbs to make herbal tea to help cure things like headaches, migranes, etc. Another thing is that we value our families as much as they do. Like they hold their close ones dear and keep that close bond we also do the same even if they live somewhere that's not close to us like Toronto or India but we still try to go and visit. All in all there are many similarities but there are also differences.

  26. Our lifestyle is similar yet different to the peoples of the Northwest Coast. We are similar because we like to make use of the resources we have in our enviroment, such as making teas and medications from plants and leaves. We also both eat salmon, as were close to the ocean. The people of the Northwest Coast care about our environment and cherish everything they have as we take things for granted.

  27. I believe we are similar in many ways to the native tribes. We both use out resources to our advantage and most of us believe in some kind of afterlife.
