Explain one way that your lifestyle or culture has been shaped by the geography of where you live.

  1. Because I live on the coast of BC, it causes the weather to be more mild. This makes it easier to play an outdoor sport, such as soccer, all year round because our winters do not get as snowy or cold as other places East of the Rockies, like Saskatchewan.

  2. Oh gosh. You just had to post a thought provoking question.
Mainly the weather, since Canada has a dramatic difference of precipitation and temperature from Africa we've come to discover we have to do things differently then what we would do in Africa. We tend to stay indoors a lot more often since this country is up North on the planet. It's reaaaaally cold compared to Africa so we're not used to it. (Did we answer this correctly?)

  3. because i live in a multicultural society with different people from different heritages. this allows me to experience new foods and customs. another thing is the mountains. since its gets cold enough to snow i can go skiing and snowmobiling which are my two favorite things.

  4. Because I live in the lower mainland, the weather is more temperate and mild. You can go fishing and biking in the spring and summer and play hockey in the Winter. There may be ice rinks but because we experience all four seasons on the west coast, there is still pond hockey.

  5. My nationality is Taiwan, which meant that when I came here, I was not very accustomed to the Canadian culture. Now, I enjoy salmon and cold winter days. The temperate weather allows me to enjoy more diverse activity's such as football, basketball, and snowboarding. I have also tasted new food, met amazing people, and experienced the beautiful Canadian scenery. (Because I live on the street on top of school, I also don't have to wake up early)

  7. Since i come from northern india, I wasn`t used to the cold temperature here, over the years I have managed to settle in. Now i seem to be loving the cold winter`s more than the warm summer`s. Secondly, the amount of pollution in India was not the best air to breath in, after coming to Canada i have found it much easier to breath deeply and to have fresh air go in. Lastly, I have now been able to try foods and activities from other diverse cultures.Thank you.

  8. Delta, and the surrounding Lower Mainland, is bordered by a mountainous region. The Rocky Mountains to the east blocks the cold wind of the Prairie Provinces; as a result, our area has a more temperate climate. North of Greater Vancouver, the most southerly North Shore Mountains provides me with recreational opportunities such as hiking, skiing, or biking throughout the year. In addition, the many parks around Delta, expanses of natural vegetation and greenery among the vast cities, provide other ways to enjoy the native foliage and wildlife found around Delta.

  9. I was born and grew up in the lower mainland of BC, because of that I have grown used to the temperate climate here. Such as the fall season full of rain and the winter seasons full of cold winter air, also the spring and summer seasons with the warm, hot air, because of this I have many different things to do such as ice skating in fall and winter and swimming in spring and summer. Also if I were in northern India I would not have had the chance to learn swimming because of the warm, hot, dry climate there.

  10. Since I have lived in the lower mainland all my life I have adapted to a temperate climate. Whatever the temperature any of the sports I like I can still do. For example, when it is cold I play ice hockey and when it is hot I play ball hockey.

  11. I was born in Taiwan but I grew up mostly in BC. When I came here, I was not used to the Canadian culture; more used to the Taiwanese culture. Canadian culture is quite different from Taiwanese culture in some parts. Such as (only named some):
In Taiwan, the climate/weather is tropical considering Taiwan lies on the Tropic of Cancer. There are many foods that you can eat especially in the summer.
In BC, the climate/weather here is way cooler than Taiwan.
Which means it will allow me to enjoy my favourite hobbies, like badminton, swimming, piano playing, jogging and lots more. All in all, British Columbia and Taiwan are my homes…..for now.

  12. One way that my lifestyle has been changed by the geography of the lower mainland is that the weather is about the same all year round because the weather is very temperate here and with the temperate weather practically all the time, it gives a good opportunity to play outside or to go up to the mountains and go skiing/snowboarding.

  13. I've lived in the middle east and India where temperature's have been extremely hot or just too rainy; I've also have visited places where temperatures have been on the extreme cold side, but when coming to BC I've only expierienced the temperate mid-ranged weather which helps in facts of playing sports and travelling around because you don't have to deal with heavy snow usually.

  14. the weather because during the winter it's not freezing cold and during the summer it's not boiling hot so it's not like it limits what we can do. Because if we had like huge snowstorms or floods or massive heat waves we probably couldn't drive or walk through the snow or tons of rain.

  15. Where I live (Delta, B.C.) the weather is mainly temperate, so it lets me do the same sports all year round, such as soccer, baseball and badminton.

  16. Living in BC my whole life, I have come to enjoy rain, which we get a ton of, and I have found my things to do indoors and in the rain. Sports are a big part of where I live too. Sports go all year round, rain or shine, because even though it is raining it isn't very cold. Also, because we live near the ocean not only do I eat a fair amount of fish, but I swim mostly in lakes, rivers, and the ocean. Another thing is the air. BC has a lot of trees, meaning the air is very clean. When I went to Ontario, I found the air much different to breath in because there aren't as many trees.

  17. I use to live in nothern India so moving in BC was a huge change for me. The long days in summers gave me an opportunity to try different sports and in winters I learned how to snowborad. I got to meet new people and try different things which was over all a good experience.

  18. Since I have been born and raised in the lower mainland I have adapted to the temperate climate. This climate allows me to enjoy sports, which are a big part of my life. I can enjoy sports such as soccer in the spring and early fall and basketball in the winter.

  19. One way my lifestyle has been shaped based off of living in the Lower Mainland is how I plan on playing sports. Since I play badminton a lot, which is an indoor and outdoor activity, the weather is crucial to how you play. Because the weather is pretty mild here (besides the excessive amount of rain in Vancouver!) it has really helped me determine how, when and where I am able to play.

  20. living in delta my whole life has allowed me to adapt to the cold, wet winters/falls and decently hot summer/springs. i am able to play beach volleyball outside in the summer due to the warm weather but i play indoor volleyball in the winter because it is to cold outside.

  21. Since we get so much rain living on the coastline our houses have to be able to withstand that. Architects have had to adapt to making changes to our homes to filter the excessive precipitation. For example bigger gutters to filter the water out etc.

  22. There are many ways as to how my lifestyle has been shaped by the geographical features around me. For example, I am easily situated near mountains, and get to hike there in the summer, and snowboard in the winter. Moreover, living in Canada has influenced many of my hobbies as well, such as biking, basketball, and badminton, all of which can be played outside. After coming from a tropical region such as India, it was truly amazing to see snow here, and being able to just step outside and play a game with greenery all around.

  23. I too came from Taiwan, but it was not hard adapting to the cold temperatures of Canada, since I was born in BC. I lived a very different lifestyle in Taiwan compared to here.

Back in Taiwan, i enjoyed eating much more and waws less active due to the fact that Taiwan is very small and surrounded by water. As a result of the water, i very much enjoy fish and seafood, like squid, crab, shrimp, pawns, etc.

Right now in Canada, I live a more active lifestyle due to the amount of land here. More running, jogging, exersice etc. here than in Taiwan. My love for fish didn't change, but I started to really like beef thanks to the fact that there is cattle in Canada (and space for them).

  24. Vancouver is situated on the West Coast with easy access to the countries of the East such as China, Japan, Korea, Singapore VIA the Pacific Ocean. Although not as busy as the massive industrial and economic centers like Shanghai or the Newark-New York Area; the Port Metro Vancouver trades 75 billion dollars in good with over 160 trading economies. With Vancouver's perfect geological location giving it easy acces to some of the world's largest economies, and cultures for example, India, China and the United States; immigrants attracted to the benefit, wealth the hopes of having a better life come across thousands of miles and oceans and bring cultures from around the world. This being said Vancouver is one of the richest and most diverse cities in Canada and even North America.

  25. The way the geographic location of where we live has shaped our life is that the weather is mild year-round so you have to adapt if you are used to a different country that has a different climate like Taiwan. In Taiwan the weather is hot year-round,so there are some seasons that Taiwan doesn't have, for example, winter. Also Canada is a large country so there is more space to be more active.

  26. My family origins come fromt asia, china. The geography from china is extremely different from vancouver. Vancouver is verry green. With many mountains, trees and lots of wild life. For example grouse and seymour mountains. We also have burns bog and more. Since I live near burn bogs. My activities would involve biking and walking my dog in burns bog. Meanwhile in other places, such as china. Theres lots of development there meaning lots of buildings and different activities. The percipatation includes rain and clouds through the year. Meaning that our houses and clothing will need to be sturdy enough to survive in these conditions. in conclusion due to the influences of the geography, it has changed me to have a different lifestyle.

  32. I've been living in Delta ever since I was a kid. Growing up here, I've adapted to the moody/rainy weather. I've adapted by playing indoor sports during the fall, such as volleyball, and winter sports during winter, such as snowboarding.

  33. Since i have lived in the lower mainland my whole life, i have been able to adapt to the different temperatures. For example, when it rains outside i know to wear a raincoat and use an umbrella. When its hot/sunny i know to wear sunscreen.

  34. My lifestyle has been shaped by the geography of the lower mainland because during the spring/summer we get warmer weather for outdoor sports and because we are almost completely surrounded by mountains we can hike in spring and summer and ski/snowboard/ski (etc) in the winter months.

  35. In canada it rains a lot and is cold. That means i have to wear more clothes. It also means i stay inside more than people from other countries and i keep a rainjacket handy with me for most of the year. I dont think the climate really affects the chinese culture/ festivities etc. Chinese who live here still do chinese feestivals albeit with more layers of clothes and an umbrella.
